The Might Murray – Unforgetable 11

Finally, our houseboat cruise down the lovely Murray has arrived. Met up with our Woodlands way neighbours and a few extras at the Mannum IGA. We did a monster shop for 11 people for 7 days and arrived at our lovely new home for the next week. Delivered food and most importantly drinks were on board and ready for us to set sail.

Cruising down the river is so relaxing as you wile away the hours passing time talking, reading, sleeping and watching the spectacular scenery with abundant bird life.

We had a few excursions organised while docked. The first being a day in the Barossa. We were picked up at 10.00am and headed of with our tour guide, Kelly. We were taken to three wineries, Berge, Kies and Thorn-Clarke. We all had a delicious lunch at the SA Company Store. Highly recommend the food here!

Our second excursion was from Walker’s Flat where we met at5.30pm for pre dinner nibbles over looking the Murray sunset, which we didn’t get to see as it was so overcast. Once again delicious food. We were then loaded into a wagon and taken to a shearing shed for dinner-yummy rack of lamb-delicious. Desert was damper with quondong syrup. Outside the dinner shed were some rescue animals that cannot be returned to the bush. Trevor fell I love with the kangaroos while I just adored the wombats. I had been hanging out to spot one on our journey and these were the first. I always imagined them to have a harsh coat but it was so very soft. I now know why the farmers don’t like having them on their property. – Their holes are massive. After dinner we were taken in the wagon to do some spotlight spotting. There were masses of kangaroos nibbling on the lucerne crop and it is not unusual to have from 200 – 300 kangaroos in the paddock at one time. We managed to find a gigantic wombat burrow with a wombat peering out of it – so finally my wish has been granted, we have seen a wombat in his own environment! It was a great night, which, although very rustic, was great even for an Aussie. Can’t imagine how gob smacked an overseas visitor would be seeing all this.

Our last night we have spoilt ourselves and organised a cook to come on board. What an extravaganza – soup – main meal and sweets served by the chef and his team, a taste (only small) of how the rich and famous indulge.

Food on board the boat has been fabulous! We had roast lamb, BBQ and spag bol. Not to mention the nibbles and great breakfasts. No doubt a few extra kilos on each of us after our 7 days of gastronomic delights. Everybody pitching in to do his or her bit to make our ride enjoyable and comfortable for us all.

Sailing the Murray is a shore way to relax and it really is pretty awesome.

    Great summary of our trip. It was truly unforgettable. Your superb photography and Trev ‘s fab IT skills enhanced the trip. One family member said she felt she was Onboard as well.
